Match the pad to the wound

Pick the pad by how much the wound is draining and whether it has to stay sterile on contact. Non-sterile gauze sponges are the workhorses for general cleaning, dabbing on topicals, and packing wounds that get changed often. When the dressing touches a fresh surgical site or a laceration, switch to sterile gauze, which comes individually wrapped so infection control isn't a question.

ABD pads handle the heavier drainage. The fluff core pulls fluid off the wound while the outer layer stays dry against the skin, which is why they show up on post-op and hospice carts. Island dressing pads are the easy one, a gauze center with an adhesive border already built in, so there's no separate taping and they're kinder to fragile skin that can't take repeated tape.

Gauze sponges, ABD pads, and island dressings each serve a different purpose in wound care. Choosing the right one depends on the wound type, how much drainage you're dealing with, and whether the pad needs to stay in place on its own.

Non-sterile gauze sponges work well for general wound cleaning, applying topical treatments, or packing wounds that need frequent dressing changes. Our 8-ply sponges come in packs of 200, making them a practical option for facilities going through supplies quickly. If you're managing wound care at a nursing home or assisted living facility, buying gauze pads wholesale in bulk keeps you stocked without constant reordering.

Sterile gauze sponges are individually wrapped and meant for direct wound contact where infection control is a priority. These are the go-to for post-surgical sites, lacerations, and any wound that needs a clean dressing every time.

ABD pads handle heavier drainage. The absorbent core pulls fluid away from the wound while the outer layer stays dry against the skin. They're commonly used in hospice care and post-operative recovery where drainage can be significant.

Island dressing pads combine a gauze center with an adhesive border, so the dressing stays put without separate tape. They're a good choice for smaller wounds or for patients who have skin that's easily irritated by repeated taping. We carry them in boxes of 50, which works well for both home use and facility restocking.
