A walker or a rollator, and how to tell

A two-wheel walker is the right call for indoor use and short bedroom-to-bathroom trips, especially for someone who leans hard on it for support. The front wheels roll while the back legs grip, so it won't slide backward when they put weight on it. No seat, no brakes, nothing to learn.

A rollator rolls continuously and usually comes with hand brakes and a seat, which makes it the better fit for longer walks and outings. But that's also the catch. The user has to work the brakes reliably, and that takes real grip strength and steady balance, so anyone who can't manage the brakes belongs on a two-wheel walker instead. Pick by grip and balance first, distance second.

Choosing the right walker depends on where you'll use it, how far you typically walk, and whether you need a seat for resting. Standard folding walkers work well for short distances around the home and offer solid stability. Rollators with four wheels and a built-in seat are better for longer outings, grocery runs, or moving through a facility. Three-wheel rollators are lighter and easier to maneuver in tight spaces like hallways and bathrooms.

For individuals who need extra support, bariatric walkers and bariatric rolling walkers are built with wider frames and higher weight capacities. If you're recovering from a foot or knee injury, knee walkers let you stay mobile without putting weight on your lower leg.

We supply walkers and rollators to nursing homes, hospice programs, and assisted living facilities across California. If you're ordering in bulk for a care facility, we can help you find the right mix of styles and sizes for your residents. Our clinical advisors can review your current equipment and recommend options that balance safety, comfort, and cost.

For individual buyers, all of our walkers fold flat for storage and transport. Most adjust in height, so you can set them to a comfortable level without tools. If you're not sure which model fits your needs, email us at info@keraemedical.com and we'll walk you through the options.
