Picking the right Foley for the resident

Go with the smallest French size that still drains well. Sizing up sounds safer, but it isn't. A bigger Foley catheter means more urethral irritation and a higher infection rate the longer it stays in. For most adults, 16Fr or 18Fr covers it.

Material is the other call. Hydrophilic latex is fine for short post-op use, where the catheter comes out in a few days. But for anything meant to stay in past a few weeks, or for a resident with a latex sensitivity, go with 100% silicone.

Catheters come in different forms depending on the need. External catheters fit outside the body and work well for certain types of incontinence. A male external catheter, often called a condom catheter, is one of the more common types, and there are external catheter options designed for women as well. The Foley catheters and supplies we carry here are indwelling, meaning they're placed internally for continuous drainage, whether after surgery, during hospice care, or for longer-term bladder management.

The supplies around the catheter matter just as much as the catheter itself. A reliable foley catheter bag and a good stabilization device can reduce discomfort and lower the risk of urinary tract infections, one of the most common complications of catheter use. We carry sterile insertion trays, both latex and silicone Foley catheters, drainage bags, and securement devices.

Silicone catheters are generally better for longer-term use because they resist buildup and are less likely to cause allergic reactions. Latex catheters are more flexible and work well for shorter-term needs. Your healthcare provider can help determine which type fits each situation.

For nursing homes, hospice programs, and assisted living facilities that go through catheter supplies regularly, our packs are sized for bulk ordering. We can help you set up a standing order to keep your supply room stocked without the guesswork.
